Top of the Box for Wienen at Round 5
AMA ATV MX Pro circuit took on Chad Wienen’s homestate this past weekend at Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut, Illinois. Wienen went 1-1 in both events over the weekend taking two overalls and reclaiming the pro class points lead.
Wienen qualified second fastest putting himself into a good position for the first gate drop of the day. Moto 1 holeshot faired decent for him coming out of the first turn in the top five. Wienen put his head down and managed to position himself into second within the first few turns. Wienen knew he had to charge to the front of the field and before halfway through lap one he was out front. Wienen ran in some fast laps laying down the fastest lap of the moto on lap 4 to put a distance between himself and Hetrick who was running in the second place position. Wienen went on to take the first checkers of the day with a nine second lead.
Moto 2 faired similar for Wienen, this moto coming out of the first turn in second behind Hetrick. Wienen made the pass for the lead towards the end of lap one in the roller section and once again was able to stretch out from the rest of the field riding a smooth race and once again putting in the fastest lap of the moto on lap 4. Wienen charged ahead and finished with a sixteen second lead in moto 2.
“My machine and I were in sync this past weekend and I felt really good heading into my home state track. I always enjoy heading to Sunset Ridge and getting to race at their facility. I’ve been putting in some hard days training and testing to get that red background and points lead back and it felt great achieving that goal. I’m looking forward to pushing forward through the second half of the season in 2021.” Said Wienen.
Pro Stock class on Sunday faired well for Wienen as well where he once again went 1-1. There were some tough battles in moto 1, Wienen coming out of turn one just inside the top five. Wienen positioned himself into third by the end of lap one and on the third lap managed to make two passes into the lead. Moto 2 Wienen was second out of the first turn and moved into first before the end of lap one. Wienen went on to take the win and the overall.
The AMA ATV MX Pro National Championship series will resume July 3-4 at Pleasure Valley Raceway in Johnstown, Pennsylvania for Round 6.
