The final round of the Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship is all but a week away, and it only feels like a few days since the race season got underway with the inaugural running of the Daytona ATVSX. Now here we sit staring Dirt Days at Loretta Lynn’s right in the face. How does time go so quickly? All I know is that I have been told “time flies when you are having fun” and I suppose that is the only thing that can describe why it feels like this.
Myself I have been in at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch since a few days after Unadilla and did not get to make the trek to Red Bud. As much as I missed being there it was rather imperative that I be here to get ready for this year’s AMA Amateur National Finals for the two wheeled sector of our industry. There had been a lot of flooding that hit the ranch earlier this year and basically I had to rebuild the entire sound system as well help with some clean up and reconstruction. I do more than announce and have spent many years here so it was best in the end that I did but a true bummer I missed all the excitement.
As far as the event this week it has been stellar. Randy Poulter came about a week ahead of time as well and made some rather substantial changes to the course. It has created even better racing lines and honestly true champions are prevailing. I have never seen this track get as rough and technical as what it is this year. There were sever hundreds of tons of sand placed into the soil which has created a racing surface very similar to some of the race tracks we have seen in the ATV world. So it may just be a little different Dirt Days than we have ever seen in the past.
RacerTV will be providing live coverage of Saturday’s Pro racing and some featured amateur classes. With the title still on the line I am sure there are lots of folks that are excited for this. It has been a few years since the title came down to the final round like this and this is creating a lot of excitement considering there is still a chance that we may see a new champion. Yes I realize it is a stretch considering Chad Wienen’s consistency but there are two more starts and about 40 more minutes of racing and anything can happen. This theory is exactly what Joel Hetrick is hoping to come to pass. Will it? Tune in Saturday at 2:30 central 3:30 eastern Saturday August 8th to find out.
The big question you may have is “What about the heat?” The answer is, “YES!” It has been miserable. The hottest it has been in a while. A bit of relief came in though midweek and the humidity has been much more bearable. I hope it remains like this but if it doesn’t I know there are some that will be okay with that. However there are many of us that will not but a true champion will emerge in each class and the heat of Dirt Days may be just what it takes to show our true colors. The best word of advice I can give is to prepare now. Drink lots of liquids and be well hydrated. Also if you can come early get here as soon as you can. If you can make it Monday or even Sunday I would make it happen. If not for the heat, come and enjoy “The world’s greatest motocross racing vacation!”
That’s it for me now. I am headed back to the announcer tower here at Loretta’s to crown some two wheeled national champions. Next week it will be the quads. Good luck to everyone and safe journeys to all. This is one you are not going to want to miss. Till next time, God Bless Your Heart and All Your Vital Organs.
