Chad Wienen was back on top of the podium again this past weekend at Round 2 of the 2014 Mtn. Dew AMA ATV MX National Championship at Muddy Creek MX in Blountville, Tenn. The Wienen Motorsports SSi Yamaha Maxxis Walsh rider extended his points lead heading into a six week break for the series. Thomas Brown fell short of the podium after a first moto crash but ended up salvaging a sixth place overall finish at the end of the day.
Wienen claimed the fastest qualifier award in morning practice and came out of the first turn in the top three. Wienen was able to move into the second place position before the end of the first lap. Brown sat just outside the top five out of the first turn but quickly made his way into fourth. A battle for the lead emerged, as all four of the front riders were less than a bike length apart. About halfway through the moto, Brown and the rider in third crashed. Wienen and the first place rider continued to battle the entire moto; Wienen was unable to find a smart place to pass and came through the checkers in second. Brown went on to salvage an 11th place finish in moto 1.
"This weekend didn't turn out as I was hoping but I am looking forward to heading back home for the next few weeks and getting myself prepped and read for round 3 where I hope to find my first podium of the season," said Brown.
As the gate dropped for moto 2, Wienen once again found himself in the front of the pack coming out of the first turn in second. He quickly made a pass for the lead within the first few turns and went on to create a comfortable lead and took the checkers and overall win at Muddy Creek. Brown started just outside the top ten and had to put his head down to find passing opportunities. Just before the halfway point, Brown made his way into fifth and pressured the rider in fourth for two laps until he made a pass stick and finally settled into the fourth place position until the end of moto 2.
"The new track layout made for some tight racing, track got hard and slick in both moto's that made setup key. My Maxxis tires were hooking up and my Fox shocks soaked up the holes out there. My starts all day were on point and the Malaska Motorsports engine helped with that. All in all a great weekend of racing on my Wienen Motorsports Yamaha YFZ450R." said Wienen.
Wienen Motorsports SSi Yamaha Maxxis Walsh Pro-Am Rider, Nick Gennusa went 5-7 at Round 2 for 8th overall. In moto 1 Gennusa was able to come out of the first turn just outside the top five and was able to make his way into fifth by the time the checkers flew. In moto 2, Gennusa got a bad start and was at the back of the field. Gennusa had his work cut out for him but was able to go from a fifteenth position to seventh before the end of the final moto of the day.
The 2014 Mtn. Dew ATVMX Pro National Championship will resume for Round 3 on May 17 at High Point Raceway in Mount Morris, Penn.
