Fourth of July weekend hosted the sixth round of racing for the AMA ATV MX Pro National Championship. Wienen Motorsports’ Chad Wienen secured second overall after a 2-2 finish.
Coming out of the first turn in forth in moto 1, Wienen put his head down knowing he had to move his way to the front of the field quickly. Making a pass into third on the second lap, Wienen sat just under four seconds behind the leader. The following lap Wienen once again was able to advance in the field and moved into the second place position. With two seconds between himself and the racer out front, Wienen started putting in some fast laps in an attempt to close the gap, halfway through the moto Wienen slowly began shaving down time. With three laps to go Wienen had diminished the gap to just over a second but was unable to head to the front of the field by the time the checkers flew. Wienen finished moto 2 in second.
Being unable to execute a good start in moto 2 cost Wienen a fighting chance at getting out to the front of the field. Wienen came out of the first turn at the back of the field but was able to move up into seventh by the end of lap one. Moving into the forth position by the forth lap, Wienen was already eight seconds behind the racer out front. Halfway through Wienen moved his way into third and with five laps to go, moved into second where he finished out moto 2.
“Despite the bad start in moto 2, I felt good on a track that doesn’t necessarily suit my style of riding. With four rounds to go I’m going to be focusing on grabbing better starts to help in the quest to regain the points lead.”
Wienen now trails one point behind in the championship points standing.
Wienen finished 1-3 for second overall in the Pro Production Stock class. Second out of the first turn in moto 1, Wienen moved into the lead before the end of lap one. Tight racing between him and second left for great spectating and Wienen maintained the lead by less than half a second as the checkers flew in moto 1. Back of the field start for Wienen in moto 2 had Wienen come across the first lap in fifth. Into third by lap two, Wienen started closing the gap between himself and second but with time winding down, Wienen closed the gap to .2 seconds by the end of the moto but ultimately crossed the finish line in third.
The AMA ATV MX National Circuit resumes July 17 & 18 in New Berlin, NY at Unadilla Valley Racing.
